Fire Prevention

The Staunton Fire Protection District is dedicated to saving lives and educating the public. As important as responding to emergencies, the Staunton Fire Protection District strives to encourage behaviors and habits that prevent accidents. Besides the topics listed to the right, the SFPD provides public education by utilizing the following resources:

  • Weekly Newspaper Topics - The SFPD publishes articles in two newspapers every week and currently has over 350 articles available for print
  • Cable TV ads - Through an agreement with a local cable company public education spots are aired weekly
  • Public Speakers Available - The department typically provides 15-20 speaking programs per year ranging in topics from fire and safety issues pertaining to business', educational facilities, and hospitals, to senior safety, and fire safety for families
  • Public Education Sign - Located in front of the fire station, fire prevention topics are changed weekly
  • School Partnership Program - Representatives from the department will provide education to students in shop and/or home economics classes with topics ranging from use of a fire extinguisher to cooking safety. The school in turn then provides services such as construction of the fire prevention sign located in front of the fire department
  • Operation Prom Night - Once a year the SFPD partners with other emergency medical services, such has Staunton Area Ambulance and Arch Air Medical Helicopter, to stage a mock drunk driving accident involving teens from the local high school.
  • National Fire Safety Council - For over 20 years the fire department partners with the National Fire Safety Council, which raises funds and provides fire-prevention handouts/education materials to children in pre-school through sixth grade
  • Illinois Fire Safety Alliance - The Staunton Fire Protection District is a member of the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance, which is a statewide organization that administers and supports public education.
